Open letter to the Defra Secretary George Eustice MP calling for a halt to the badger cull in 2020

On Monday 27 April the Badger Trust wrote an open letter to the Defra Secretary George Eustice MP calling for a halt to the badger cull in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, citing three key factors:

  • Culling operations will not be subject to any independent monitoring by Natural England field operatives for the purposes of animal welfare, cull contractor observation and public safety

  • Culling operations will require significant levels of police manpower and resources at a time when these are needed elsewhere

  • Culling operations will require thousands of contractors who will pose a risk of Covid-19 transmission as a result of coming into contact with farmers, landowners, the police and members of the public
