Open letter to the Defra Secretary George Eustice MP calling for a halt to the badger cull in 2020
On Monday 27 April the Badger Trust wrote an open letter to the Defra Secretary George Eustice MP calling for a halt to the badger cull in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, citing three key factors:
Culling operations will not be subject to any independent monitoring by Natural England field operatives for the purposes of animal welfare, cull contractor observation and public safety
Culling operations will require significant levels of police manpower and resources at a time when these are needed elsewhere
Culling operations will require thousands of contractors who will pose a risk of Covid-19 transmission as a result of coming into contact with farmers, landowners, the police and members of the public
The Badger Trust relies on your donation to continue our work to enhance the welfare, conservation and protection of badgers, their setts and their habitats. At this time of national crisis, any gift you can make now helps us support our local Badger Groups, keep our badger crime reporting centre open, and carry on our vital campaign work.
