Badger Trust seeks new Trustees

We are seeking new trustees to join our Board to help support the current Trustees and Chief Executive in continuing to deliver the objectives of the charity, and to ensure we have the right mix of skills, experience and people to achieve even more for badgers in the coming years.

Established over 30 years ago, Badger Trust exists to promote and enhance the welfare, conservation and protection of badgers, their setts, and their habitats. We are the leading voice for badgers in England and Wales. We represent and support around 60 local voluntary badger groups, and thousands of supporters and followers. Our organisation provides expert advice on all badger issues and works closely with the government, police, and other conservation organisations.

The charity is at an exciting stage of development, with a recent organisational review, subsequent investment in the staff team, and work on a new 5 year strategy to ensure we deliver maximum impact for badgers to 2025 and beyond. We run a range of campaigns, including core areas covering the ongoing cull, persistent wildlife crime, and around planning and development issues.

We invite individuals with skills and experience in any of the following areas; finance, HR, national campaigning, marketing and impact monitoring, who can help add value to our Board with their professional knowledge. In particular we are looking for a Treasurer, who will also lead the Finance Committee. We seek applicants who are good strategic thinkers, can work collaboratively, and will engage with the broader role of a trustee.

Badger Trust embraces diversity and we want to diversify our Board in terms of skills, background and life experience. We welcome all applications, and particularly individuals from racially diverse backgrounds and people with a disability, as they are currently under-represented on our Board. We also welcome applications from individuals who reflect the wide range of socio-economic backgrounds in the UK. It is essential that applicants are passionate about badger welfare, and we very much encourage badger group members to apply to ensure our network of groups are duly represented and bring the perspective of local groups to national strategy.

The Board usually meets in person with quarterly meetings, held on a Saturday. At present these are virtual, and we may retain a mix of both going forward once past the COVID situation. There may be a need to attend virtual meetings outside of the quarterly dates. We also hold an AGM and an annual Symposium which Trustees are expected to attend and support. The head office is currently based in West Sussex, but Board meetings are usually held in central England for ease of access for all.

Tris Pearce has been a trustee since 2016 and has found the role very rewarding:

'Since being on the board of a national charity I have developed skills that I am able to utilise daily and also share expertise. I have been able to see aspects of different roles within the organisation and have met people from all walks of life with different backgrounds. The board at BT takes collective responsibility for its decisions.
We have received training and have also had to deal with some really challenging but rewarding tasks over the years. I really do get a sense of achievement and also pride in helping the species and the charity at this level.'

Chair, Jo Bates-Keegan, who joined the board in 2016, encouraged people to get in touch:

'I enjoy stretching myself and using skills that I wouldn't ordinarily get the opportunity to use. Sometimes it is challenging, but it's always interesting and there's always something to learn. I hope that I am making a difference, that's what I aim for.'

Trustee (including Treasurer) roles are voluntary and without remuneration. Expenses incurred for Board business will be reimbursed in accordance with our expenses policy.
